We have almost come to the end of, not just another year, but the first ten of the new millennium – how time passes! I can remember 2000 as if it was yesterday, although I cannot remember too much about Hogmanay at the turn of the Millennium – my good wife does, and keeps reminding me!

We have much to celebrate – Matt has won the X factor, The Ashes down under look promising as we go to press, the Olympics are not far off, and we have the Royal wedding to look forward to in 2011 and an extra holiday!

On a personal note I am looking forward to the arrival of my first grandchild – around Christmas, so it’s looking pretty exciting – I just hope I get my Christmas dinner ok! We also have had employees becoming Mums and Dads in 2010. Sarah our Credit controller and Duncan (her partner) gave birth to baby Joseph (Sarah did) and it was fantastic news to hear that Richard Valks, our sales account manager and his wife Jane has recently given birth to a baby boy, Edward Thomas, who weighed in at 8lbs 6ozs (heavier than a rugby ball). Richard is a big Rugby fan and player!

We all wish these proud parents all the best and every happiness and would advise to start saving for their University tuition fees now!

The business scene has been challenging in 2010 as it was in 2009 and Harpers has been strengthened through the acquisition of a Hazardous Waste recycling, reprocessing site and transfer station in Middlesbrough – Harpers Environmental Services Ltd. This allows us to offer a much wider service offering to our valued customer base. I would like to welcome all our new staff members and management at our Middlesbrough site led by Darren Smith, General Manager, Jeff who heads up site operations and Pauline who has recently joined as finance and administration manager.

As I write this, the snow is melting and I can see green grass again out of my office window. I have heard the weather professionals are guaranteeing us a white Christmas! So I hope everyone can get around to visit family and friends.

Our Chairman, Nick Harper, also likes a bit of ice and snow as his passion is ice climbing. His domain is on highly exposed vertical rock faces covered in snow and ice in the Scottish Mountains (training ground) and further afield (serious stuff). So happy ice axing Nick and please make sure your pitons, crampons, ropes, belays, and ice axes are all in good working order before you venture out!

I take the opportunity to wish all our customers and suppliers a peaceful and happy Christmas and a prosperous 2011. I am sure we all have had our own challenges and pressures as we have grappled with the recessionary impact. 2011 will present new challenges and I look forward to continuing to build on our existing successful relationships and professional approach to servicing our customer’s diverse requirements.

Finally a very merry Christmas and a healthy, happy and prosperous new year to all our staff and families, from our hard working operatives and drivers in the field to the dedicated staff who make things happen every day, behind the scenes, servicing our customer’s requirements. Thank you for all your hard work and keep it going!

Sincerely

Bob Holley

Reducing the cost of waste disposal

Realising that the average sludge contained a high percentage of water, which was needlessly being transported for disposal at the local waste water Treatment works, Harpers decided to look for a on-site system that would take the treatment works to the sludge and the AVC/dosing pump system was seen to be the most cost effective.

The principle behind the AVC/dosing pump system is to deliver a high volume reduction of sludge. The dosing unit is used to mix polymer into the sludge as it is being pumped into the AVC dewatering container. The mixing of polymer into the sludge creates a flocculation that increases the speed and efficiency of the dewatering process. The Dosing unit pumps the sludge into the AVC dewatering container where the separation of the water and dry matter occurs.

The AVC consists of a closed container, equipped inside with filtration screens. The filtration screens drain and de-water the flocculated sludge. This gives you clean water that can be reprocessed and a filter cake which can be take to landfill for disposal with a 60% reduction in volume.

Initially one of our dewatering experts will visit your site and carry out a site survey, We will take sample of the liquid and sludge waste. We will then test the waste to ensure that it can be dewatered; the testing will also determine the quality of the filter cake. This process will be carried out in our laboratory’s once this has been completed a full proposal will be submitted to our client.

Looking resplendent on the Whale Tankers stand at PAWRS is an articulated tipping tanker sporting the livery of Harper’s Waste Management Services of York. Manufactured to ADR Class 3, 6.1 and 8 specification and with the capacity to transport hazardous waste, the 44-tonne GVW unit with tri-axle running gear is set to join Harper’s 65 strong HGV fleet post show.

Complete with Edbro tipping gear, the unit has been designed as a lightweight, effective and flexible deep lifting vacuum tanker. In addition to a main 5,400 gallon tipping tank, with inbuilt 220 gallon overspill compartment, Harper’s specified a separate static, front-mounted tank for improved vehicle stability when in tipping mode. Both the tanks and water-jetting compartment are manufactured from 316-grade stainless steel.

Featuring SAF tri-axle air suspension with lifting front axle, load sensing and stability traction control, the tipping tanker incorporates the powerful Kaiser – KWP3100i liquid ring pump. Driven by its own chassis mounted diesel engine, the pump delivers a powerful operating performance of 3100m3/h and 85% maximum vacuum.

With three top man lids on the main tipping tank and full length walkway, the tri-axle semi-trailer unit is also equipped with a rear offside mounted jetting system that has a hydraulically operated reel and 60m ½” high pressure hose for vehicle cleaning and washing down.

When commissioned, the ADR tipping tanker will be predominantly deployed by Harper’s – one of the UK’s most progressive waste management companies – to vacuum sludges on behalf of major utility providers and private customers.

Commenting on the specification of the new unit, Harper’s Operations Director, Kevin Maguire said:

“The new tipping tanker is the sixth new Whale to enter our fleet over the last couple of years. In addition to being a very robust product, which is essential given the fact that they often operate in hostile environments, Whale tankers are very user-friendly and simple to operate.”

Innovative environmental practices are helping Harpers Waste Management significantly reduce its carbon footprint as well as saving the company tens of thousands of pounds.

The company which has bases in Billingham and York, deals in waste removal and disposal. It used to separate solid from wet material, taking the solids to landfills and transporting the waste water to dispose of elsewhere.
Through a reorganisation of its systems and minimal investment onsite it has been able to extract the waste water from the sludge, filter it and then re-use it to ‘jet out’ or clean out the drains.

The new system which involved an amalgamation of existing practices and investment in new machinery was started in January this year and was fully operational by July. At a cost of about £2,000 the company can now carbon filter the water and reuse it.

Altogether the company is now saving up to £50,000 a year through the new systems as well as significantly reducing its carbon footprint as the waste water no longer needs transporting and can be reused.

In addition, Harpers is in the process of replacing its 47-strong fleet of lorries and vans to Euro 5 vehicles – those with the lowest carbon emissions. In the last two years it has purchased 15 Euro 5 lorries and eight Euro 4 vans. While this has cost the company a considerable amount upfront, it has found that the investment has paid dividends – lowering emissions as well as significantly increasing fuel efficiency. The new vehicles are able to do two miles to the gallon more than the Euro 3 vehicles and when the company covers around 80,000 miles a year, this is a significant saving.
